Limescale-free bathrooms: what works in a hard water area

Spotless white bathroom with polished chrome taps

Limescale is calcium left behind when water evaporates. Remove it with a mild acid, not with a scouring pad — abrasives dull chrome permanently.

Weekly routine

  • Squeegee the shower screen after use; two seconds beats twenty minutes later
  • Wipe taps dry after cleaning so fresh deposits cannot form

Removing build-up

Soak a cloth or kitchen roll in white vinegar or a proprietary descaler, wrap it around the tap for thirty minutes, then rinse and buff. For shower heads, unscrew and soak overnight.

What to avoid

Never use acid descalers on natural stone, marble or unsealed grout, and never mix bleach with anything else. If you are unsure, ask your cleaner — we test a hidden area first.
